Your guide to choosing a perfect raincoat.
Living in Britain means living with a lot of wet weather, so finding the right coat or jacket to keep you protected from the rain can take a lot of hard work. Here at Joules, we can help you stay prepared with our collection of waterproof raincoats and jackets. With a variety of options, there’s something for everyone and every outdoor activity. Simply use this handy guide to help choose the perfect style for you.
*All measurements are based on a UK size 12.
Choose a style:
Meet a waterproof and breathable raincoat that was designed with the great British outdoors in mind. Part of our Right as Rain collection, the Coast Jacket has zip and button fastening for extra protection to keep you warm and dry, and with a flattering shape and fit you’re sure to look stylish even in the wet weather.
Our mid-length Coast waterproof jacket has proved popular for the extra coverage it provides in a downpour. Cut to the same length with the flattering curved hem you love, this new-season version has been updated with a new cord detail at the hood and duffle-style wooden toggles for added charm.
Make sure nothing can rain on your parade with our Golightly packaway jacket. Always a popular choice, the PU coating and taped seams make it 100% waterproof so you can take it everywhere and always outwit the weather. We’ve created a number of different designs, from ditsy florals and polka dots, to a statement leopard print.
Packed with nautical details and functional features. Every time we see this waterproof jacket, we instantly imagine wearing it on a wet and windy coastal walk – and yet know it’ll be also great when running into town on those grey and dreary days.
This waterproof and breathable coat comes with its own little bag so it can be stashed away quickly, easily and in style. But that’s not the only thing it comes with. This new relaxed fit raincoat is packed full of stylish and practical features such as an adjustable hood with a storm peak to keep out driving wind and rain, elasticated cuffs, luxury trims and a mesh lining. The slightly relaxed fit means it’s perfect for accommodating extra layers on those cooler days.
Yes! A raincoat is the ideal piece of clothing to keep you, (well your upper half at least), nice and dry when that unpredictable British weather strikes. And because that unpredictability is an all year-round thing, at Joules, our raincoats are lightweight, so you can always out-wit the weather, whatever the season.
Raincoats are there primarily to keep you dry, but they often have added features such as a cotton lining in the hood and body. At Joules, we want to keep you warm when the weather takes a turn for the worse, which is why our Coast Mid Waterproof Coat is not only 100% waterproof, it’s lightweight and cosy too.
Rain and wind are a combination that could wreak havoc on your day, so you need a good raincoat that will protect you from both. With lined hoods and bodies, our Right as Rain collection here at Joules is great for keeping the wind away, so you can go about your day, whatever the weather forecast.
Before putting your coat into the washing machine, you should always read the care label. As a general rule for washing a raincoat, (if you don’t want to put it in the washing machine), wiping it down with a damp cloth will help remove any post-stroll dirt. Always make sure the coat is fully dry before putting it back in your cloakroom.
Many raincoats use a durable mix of cotton and polyester to ensure they always do their job at keeping you dry. Here at Joules, we use a similar blend for our raincoats as polyester is a very strong material that is resistant to shrinking while still maintaining that much-needed flexibility.
Always check the care label on your raincoat before putting it in the washing machine. If you want to know this before buying your coat, you’ll be happy to hear that at Joules, our website lists care instructions for each of our products. As a general though, our waterproof coats are machine washable and should then be reshaped whilst damp, so they don’t lose that perfect fit.
We understand that finding somewhere to store your raincoat around the house while it’s drying can be impractical, however we do advise against tumble-drying our raincoats. Instead, try wiping them down with a dry cloth to remove excess moisture and leave them somewhere to air dry before hanging them up for your next countryside stroll.
There is not one answer here – everyone is different and want different things from their raincoat, so they should fit how you want them to. Ours are designed to fit nicely over layers, without adding bulk, but always retain that element of style that you would want in a coat.
Ideally, raincoats should be stored upright on a hook or hanger. If you get caught in a downpour, when you get back to the comfort of your home, make sure you wipe off any excess moisture with a soft cloth and hang it up to dry as soon as you can. It will dry relatively quickly on its own, but before putting it back in your wardrobe or cloakroom, make sure it’s completely dry to the touch.
Waterproof and breathable fabrics consist of an outer layer called the ‘face fabric’. This is usually made of nylon or polyester, and has a laminated membrane, or coating, on the back of the fabric to repel water. For a garment to be waterproof, the holes from the stitching need to be covered so no water can seep through the seams. These are known as sealed or taped seams, which all of our waterproof rain coats have.
